Front-End Application Examples

The on-chip IF amplifier allows the use of cost-effective can tuners. Component count and bill-of-material of the total front-end system are reduced, as compared to the standard system partitioning.

The DRX 3973D and the DRX 3977D can be applied as demodulators for DVB-T applications or – in combination with the DRX 3960A – in a hybrid front-end for combined analog and DVB-T reception. The combination DRX 3973D or DRX 3977D and DRX 3960A enables an economic solution for hybrid reception, using only one tuner and one 8-MHz SAW filter. This concept allows the end-user to receive analog or DVB-T broadcasts, depending on the local spectrum allocation.

DVB-T Front-End Block Diagram

Figure 2 shows a block diagram of a typical DVB-T front-end. The DRX 3973D is used to control a tuner via the optional RF-AGC signal. If the tuner has an integrated RF-AGC, this signal line is not required. The 4 MHz clock reference output of the tuner is used as clock input for the DRX 3973D, thus saving an external crystal. Via the pre-SAW sense input, the RF signal level can be monitored for optimal RF-AGC control and/or RF-level measurement.

Hybrid front-end reference design for DVB-T and analog TV reception

Description

Economy front-end solution for DVB-T and analog TV is realized by the hybrid front-end reference design, using a single tuner to receive DVB-T and analog TV broadcast. This reference design suits to IDTV, tuner module, DVD-R, PVR, and PC-TV applications. The output signals are CVBS and SIF signals for analog TV reception and MPEG-TS for DVB-T.
