Short description

Nowadays, watching a movie on a large flat-panel display (FPD) is a pleasure, but still associated with disturbing jagged edges, film judder and motion blur that is common on today’s LCD TVs. Judder appears due to the conversion of film sources from 24p to 50p/60p. Motion blur is caused by the LCD sample-and-hold characteristics. Consequently, Micronas has developed the Frame Rate Converter FRC 94xyH to solve these problems.

The IC contains the unique Real Motion® HD technology that removes film judder on panels up to Full HD (1080p). Real Motion HD goes further than any existing motion compensation technology, enabling inter-frame generation of up to 120 frames/sec. This virtually removes motion blur on LCD TVs. The new diagonal line compensation technology ensures razor sharp diagonal lines on Full HD.

With the FRC 94xyH, Micronas has revolutionized the viewing experience, surpassing the increasing expectations for WXGA and Full HD display solutions by providing picture quality that is the closest possible approach to reality.

The FRC 94xyH integrates all these functionalities with sharpness and contrast enhancement in a single package.

This perfect compilation of picture enhancement features is called truD® HD.In combination with a high-end TV chassis, the FRC-H offers the best video and graphic quality.

System Architecture

A block diagram of the FRC 94xyH is shown in Fig. 1. Supported inputs are ITU 656, ITU 601, or RGB/YUV video signals and RGB 565 for graphic input. To preserve the original quality, the RGB 565 graphic input is routed directly to the display processing. The video input signals are stored in the memory. A frame-rate interpolation follows the motion estimation and compensation functions. Finally, scaling is accomplished.

The built-in 8-bit microcontroller supports and controls the algorithms used in the IC.
